Who is Mrs. Lisa Mungin?  I have been teaching for 19 years in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools.   I was a classroom teacher for grades 2 and 3 for sixteen years and then moved into the Title I reading teacher position here at Holland three years ago.  Virginia Beach has always been my home and I plan to stay here with my husband and my second grade son.  My favorite things to do is spend the day on the beach with my family and friends and, of course, I love reading and sharing my love of reading with my students.

What is Title I?  Title I is the largest federal aid program for elementary and secondary schools.  Through it, the federal government provides funding for school districts to support supplementary services designed to improve the educational performance of low-achieving children in high-poverty schools.  There are two visions of the program’s purpose: to aid low-income children and high poverty schools and to help educationally-deprived children regardless of their income.  Basically, the program is intended to provided additional educational services to the students who will benefit from it most.  The federal aid is given to high poverty schools but the services for children are based on academic need not income.

How do I spend my day?  I work in three 2nd grade classrooms and three 4th grade classrooms.  I spend 30-40 minutes during the classroom guided reading time with a small group of students working on best practices for reading.  We work on phonics, fluency, and reading strategies for better reading experiences.

Below you will find how time is spent in a typical 2nd grade reading group:

The Teaching Plan for Second Grade

Revisiting (5 minutes) Children spend this time reading alone or with partners on previously read books while I am working with and/or coaching individual children.

Teaching (10-15 minutes) During this time I am directly teaching phonemic awareness, phonics and high-frequency words.

Reading (10-15 minutes)  This is our time that we spend on a selected story.  We practice our story words, reading strategies and fluency in reading.

Responding (5 minutes)  Finally we review the activities we practiced and we discuss the story and the strategies we used during our time together.

Below you will find how time is spent in a typical 4th grade reading group:

The Teaching Plan for Fourth Grade

Revisiting (5 minutes) Children spend this time reading alone or with partners on previously read books while I am working with and/or coaching individual children.  Or we may spend this time sharing self-selected books that we are currently reading and enjoying with each other.

Reviewing (5 minutes) During this time we are reviewing what we worked on in the lesson from the previous day.

Rehearsing (5-10 minutes)  We take this time to discuss what we will be reading and how we will use our reading strategies.

Reading (10-15 minutes)  This is the time we use to read and discuss our selected story and practice using our reading strategies to get the most out of what we read.

Responding (5 minutes)  Finally we get a few minutes to talk and write about what we practiced during our time together.
