The answer to a frequently asked question from our Reading Recovery® parents:

When my child gets stuck on a word, should I tell him/her to “sound it out?”

A big part of reading is looking at the words, but reading is mostly getting meaning from the text.

So, your child should think about what’s happening in the story and look at the pictures to see what would make sense with the word s/he sees.

When s/he makes an attempt with the word, ask them these three questions:

·        Does that make sense?  (with the picture or with what’s happening in the story)

·        Does that look right?  (Do the letters in the word LOOK like the word they said?)

·        Does that sound right?  (Is that the way it sounds in books?)

Their answer should be YES to all three questions, if their attempt was a good one.
